In the Green Room: Starting Over with David Bach
K2 is working with David Bach. Again. He was one of our first clients for his book Smart Women Finish Rich – one of our first New York Times Best Sellers. We helped prime him for national TV, and he went out and parlayed that start into a robust brand. He is now one of the personal finance experts in the nation.
So what does he need us for? The future.
David knows he can’t do it all. He needs allies and advocates and smart people around him who won’t yes him to death. He’s made a career stripping people down financially and building them back up. He’s trusts us to help him do that to himself in PR.
That’s why I’m waiting for him on January 2nd at CBS’s “The Early Show” for his fabulous new book, Start Over, Finish Rich. For this segment we are doing the book’s File Folder Box to get people’s financial lives organized.
David told me I did not have to be there, holiday weekend and all. But I told him I was coming. I’d heard him being interviewed and watched him earlier in the week on “Today” and I wanted to slow down his messaging.
He knew I was coming. He just didn’t know his baby was coming.
That’s right, baby: A real Baby New Year! He called to tell me and then his assistant called and told me I should let her know if I wanted to cancel the segment.
“Cancel? No way. See you at 6:30am.”
Hey listen, what’s he going to do? The baby was healthy and his fiancée was doing great. They weren’t leaving the hospital that day. Mother and baby needed sleep, and he couldn’t sleep. He needed something to do. I thought this might even be good for him. It might help him slow down.
I got to the Green Room at 6:00am. We always get there a half hour earlier than our clients. We go through the scripts, talk to the producer, get exact timing, lead-ins, talking points – everything that is going to happen when the client is on the air. I tell the producer David’s fiancée just had a baby…. No, I’m not joking!
I love Green Room energy. Producers coming in and out. Guests and publicists packed together, waiting excitedly. But I especially love CBS because they have the best hot chocolate in the world. I have no idea why. I had five cups. (My husband is going to kill me when he reads that.) I had a stomachache at three, but I couldn’t stop.
And then David arrives and he’s smiling and he’s got the file box and we hug. So excited to be “starting over” with him!
I get his energy up. But I don’t even bother reviewing the talking points like we do with most clients. He knows all the points and what to say even as a sleep-deprived new dad. We just go over the best audience takeaway and then he’s off – down the hall and on the air followed by a post-segment “Behind the Scenes” for the Web.
And he was fantastic. And I sent him on his way. I’d say his goodbyes. Of course, they want him back. Maybe he could have a baby every week? Because this “baby” like his real baby is doing great. Start Over, Finish Rich debuted at #3 on The New York Times Best Seller List.
