BEHIND BEING #1: SHIFTING TORY JOHNSON’S THE SHIFT TO THE TOP OF THE BESTSELLER LIST
Tory Johnson has been a client of K2 and a friend of mine for years. But this moment in time is especially meaningful – for all of us. Not just because her new book THE SHIFT debuted at #1 on the hardest New York Times Bestseller List to crack but also because it was deeply personal.
It started for us the day Tory Johnson, a regular on “Good Morning America”, was confronted in a frank conversation with an ABC News exec. This executive never once uttered the words “lose weight or else” but nevertheless that is what Tory heard. That “talk” was the moment in time that changed Tory, and SHIFTED her life forever.
Tory emailed me a little while after the “talk.” She said she had struggled with her weight all her life. Diets came and went and while everything else in her life felt successful and happy, there was still that little demon she ignored – her weight. The self proclaimed FAT GIRL had had a revelation that changed everything for her. She felt if she didn’t do it this time the job she loves so much on “Good Morning America,” with a team she respects and admires, would end. That pain was enough to get her to what would be her personal journey towards a happier and healthier life.
After she started to lose the weight, Sam Champion noted on “Good Morning America” how he was seeing a thinner, leaner Tory Johnson and asked what was going on. It was then that Tory realized what her next steps were. She asked what I thought about her writing about this journey since so many of her viewers were now asking her what she did to lose the weight and how she did it. She felt that she owed it to them to share. She knew it was different this time. It had to be. What she couldn’t say then was that writing THE SHIFT was her insurance policy and way to hold herself accountable to never gain the weight back. She had chosen to walk this new path for GOOD.
This became the start of THE SHIFT and Tory engaged K2 to help create and sell it soup to nuts. I knew THE SHIFT could make a difference, which is always what I have been most drawn to in books, projects and people. People who open themselves up to change in a real and honest way open me up to change. This was the advice Barbara Walters gave me when I started my firm: make things personal. Being personal and making business personal is what makes businesses and books successful.
Over breakfast at Michael’s – the place everyone in media and publishing calls their home – we sat and discussed the journey with Ellen Archer, Publisher of Hyperion. What Ellen connected to most was how Tory had been successful everywhere but in her weight and that this journey will allow others to shift in all aspects of their lives. She was sold – just like I was.
Part memoir, part journey, part frank talk, Tory was willing to show in this book how vulnerable she was. The end result is a fast read that has been called “cathartic” by readers and the media. People want to get unstuck – they want to make the shift. But they need to hear that it is possible from real people who have accomplished it.
And then the best news: Tory Johnson’s THE SHIFT: HOW I FINALLY LOST WEIGHT AND DISCOVERED A HAPPIER LIFE debuted #1 on the New York Times hardcover Advice How To List (9/29/13).
My friend is a #1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER!
I’ll be honest: when I found out I cried. I can’t help it. It was the same feeling I had when I saw Oprah walk across the fire with Tony Robbins. I am moved and touched by these moments. Nothing is more fulfilling then seeing someone who is authentic and passionate share who they are and succeed because of it. I will never get tired of these moments… and yes, will probably always cry.
Here’s to many more weeks as a Best Seller and making THE SHIFT a movement.
